In developing my professional human services persona, I will work to combine by values, education, and experiences in a way that remains true to my authentic self. A key part of thatidentity is to develop and maintain an online professional portfolio that includes more than just my résumé, but also incorporates training and educational certificates, and examples reflective writing.
Initially, I was skeptical about building a professional portfolio; it seemed more like busy work, than something that would benefit my career. But, after sitting with it, I began to see the potential and value. It’s more than just some documents online, it’s about intentionally shaping how I see myself and how others will see me as a professional. It will shape my career by integrating my accomplishments into my professional practice and align my professional experiences with my core values of trust, collaboration, respect, and empowerment. Overtime, my adherence to these core values will become part of my reputation, or my professional brand which will have the potential to open even more doors of opportunities within the field of human services.
The integration of social media in mental health awareness is laced with potential conflicts and ethical considerations. While these platforms can help destigmatize mental health and connect
people to resources, it is important to ensure that professionals are qualified and that the information they share is accurate and evidence based. However, the core of human service work is in its direct services, and face-to-face human connections. Technology can enhance practices and raise awareness, but it cannot replace the trust, rapport and therapeutic alliance established through in-person interactions. I will direct my focus on developing an ethical
practice, expanding my cultural competence, and building rapport with my clients.

After graduating from NAU with my bachelor’s degree in Applied Human Behavior, I will be attending graduate school to obtain my MSW. It will be crucial that I choose a CSWE-accredited graduate program that will prepare me for licensure, but also one that offers course work that will support my chosen career field of grief counseling. My ultimate career goal is to obtain my LCSW, open my own grief therapy practice, and to give back to my community by collaborating with hospice providers and community centers to offer grief group therapy.
To further advance my career I will from become a member of the National Organization for Human Services and seek out credentials from Human Services-Board Certified Practitioner credential (HS-BCP). The NOHS offers continuing educating, networking, and advocacy resources, resume support, job boards and scholarships opportunities. Whereas the Human Services-Board Certified Practitioner credential could potentially open new opportunities for
field work and internships while attending graduate school.

For my final portfolio I decided to use another program. However, after trying it, I found it too difficult to use. I looked through some of the other options and found that Wix looks professional, appears to be relatively easy to use, and has themes that can be customized without having to learn a new program language. (I am not that technically savvy.) I also liked the option to purchase the upgraded version that would allow me to transform my student portfolio into a professional site where I can showcase my education, volunteer work, and professional certifications as I continue throughout my career.
